About

Future Academies is an educational charity and multi-academy trust which is committed to helping young people succeed in life by setting them up with the best possible education. The Trust was established to improve the life chances of children through an education built on the importance of knowledge-rich teaching by subject experts and an outstanding extra-curricular programme subsidised by the charity, Future. This family of schools has built a reputation for achieving the highest standards for, and raising the aspiration of, all its pupils. Future Academies believes that the culturally literate are able to overcome social barriers and for this reason its schools are committed to knowledge, aspiration and respect.

Built around a family of schools in south Westminster, White City and Hertfordshire, Future Academies currently runs seven secondary schools and three primaries, educating nearly 7,000 pupils in total. Future’s core vision is of an excellent knowledge-rich curriculum, strong teacher training and an extensive education enrichment programme. Its knowledge-rich curriculum is supported by a Curriculum Centre which employs 15 people and develops its own extensive teaching materials to support teachers within and outside of Future Academies. Recently, the Department for Education awarded Future Academies the prestigious £4m Latin for Excellence programme which it will roll out across multiple schools. As Ofsted increasingly focuses on a coherent, sequenced curriculum, Future Academies' work on its curriculum has been very well received.

Future Academies also runs a successful SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) called Future Teacher Training which recruits high-quality subject specialist graduates. Future Teacher Training has been rated the best in the South of England by the Good Teaching Guide. Many of the teachers that it trains are placed in the Trust’s schools and others, including the West London Free School and Westminster City School, and many of these have gone on to be rapidly promoted into leadership positions.

About Trinity Academy

Trinity Academy is a mixed, non-selective secondary school and sixth form based in Brixton, London, admitting pupils from the ages of 11 to 18. Trinity Academy seeks to offer a very high quality of education. It is large enough to offer the fullest range of academic subjects and co-curricular activities yet small enough to know every student as an individual. It was graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted in its inspection earlier this year.

Role specification

The new Governors will provide strategic leadership and governance oversight to Trinity Academy, ensuring that the Academy achieves its objectives and remains aligned with Future Academies' knowledge-rich curriculum. Governors will be passionate about education and supporting the Academy through its development.

Governors promote Future Academies' ethos and values within Trinity Academy, and oversee the delivery of its strategic objectives. They provide advice and support the Board, including using their expertise and background to advise on particular matters and providing constructive challenges where required.

Governors also act as an ambassador for Trinity Academy and play a role in engaging with external stakeholders and the wider community.

Person specification

Future Academies is looking for Governors with either a commercial or educational background to sit on the Board of Trinity Academy.

Commercial — The successful candidate will have senior strategic experience within the commercial sector. They must be commercially astute and have an in-depth understanding of the challenges facing an organisation of similar size as that of the academy. They will be able to assess the nuances of these challenges and provide advice and guidance for Trinity Academy's strategy. They do not need previous experience in the education sector, but will have an understanding and appreciation of what an outstanding education looks like.

Education — The successful candidate will bring senior-level experience in education. They will be able to constructively challenge the Board and senior leadership team on curriculum development and strategy. They could be, for example, a current or recently-retired Head or Deputy Head in either the state or independent school sectors.

For both profiles, candidates will above all be aligned with the Future Academies' values and bring a passion for transforming the lives of children and helping them to overcome any barriers that they face.

Diversity — Trinity Academy welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. To better reflect its highly diverse student population, and as those from an ethnic minority background are currently under-represented on the Board, applications from such individuals would be particularly encouraged.
