The Warrior Programme is seeking to appoint up to two new Trustees to the Board. Candidates will either bring deep commercial expertise, particularly in the wellbeing / health tech space OR relevant NED experience, with understanding of and connectivity to major foundations and trusts. About

Over the last 15 years, The Warrior Programme has developed impactful programming for specifically designed for members of the armed forces and veterans. The organisation runs online and residential courses for currently serving, ex-service personnel, and their families.

The courses are intensive personal development programmes which aim to support individuals to develop the resilience, focus and motivation to succeed. The programmes are specifically designed to help individuals develop resilience and manage emotions, which helps prepare them for life outside the forces and future success. The ultimate aim of the Warrior Programme is to enable attendees fulfil their potential, deal with everyday life as well as help with focus and achievement – whether remaining in service or going back in to civilian life. The Warrior Programme is a groundbreaking leader in its space, with strong support from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, Military Benevolent Funds and the Lottery, along with many other national military foundations. Additionally, The Warrior Programme has launched as an implementing partner of NHS Op Courage, mental health information and support for veterans, service leavers, reservists, families and carers.

With aims to rapidly scale over the next few years, including the goal of developing a commercial offering to support the organisation, The Warrior Programme is looking to recruit up to two new Trustees to join the Board.

Role specification

The successful candidates will play a proactive role in the ongoing development of the organisation. The Board has overall responsibility for ensuring The Warrior Programme meets its legal and regulatory obligations. The current board is actively engaged, professional, and generous with their knowledge. 

The main responsibilities of the Trustees include:

  • Helping to define and support the organisation's purpose, vision, goals and activities
  • Guide the development of the organisation's commercial offering in order to generate sustainable income for the charity
  • Shaping strategy and overseeing and driving impact
  • Bringing insights of risks and opportunities from specific areas of expertise to the Board
  • Driving organisational delivery and improvement
  • Drawing on networks, as appropriate, to support The Warrior Programme's work

The new Trustees will be instrumental in ensuring that the Warrior Programme fulfils its mission and strategic objectives in a way that is driven by its values, and remains financially sustainable through diversified income into the future. Trustees will ultimately play an important role in determining the future strategy of the organisation as it embarks on its next stage of growth and expansion.


Person specification

The Warrior Programme is looking for up to two new Trustees to will bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the Charity’s mission. These individuals could come from a variety of functional backgrounds. However, candidates will bring senior-level leadership and expertise in one of the following:

  • Senior commercial expertise (wellbeing and health sector): while a charity, The Warrior Programme has experienced a tremendous amount of recent growth with the goal of developing a commercial offering. Someone who has operated in a start-up environment or brings an entrepreneurial lens from the wellbeing and health tech space would be highly valuable. Demonstrably high commercial acumen, particularly around developing new revenue streams through business development, and experience engaging with private sector clients, would be of particular interest to the Board. 
  • Foundations and trusts work: candidates will bring a credible track record as a senior leader in the charities space, ideally with previous experience as a Non-Executive Director. Through previous charity board involvement, they will possess an understanding of major donor, philanthropic and trust fundraising. 

Candidates who possess an executive background in sales and commercial growth, and bring a proven ability to grow revenue to the role in addition to the above, would be particularly competitive.

The successful candidate will be able to work at a strategic level whilst understanding the detail and complexities of funding delivery, appreciating the difference between a non-executive and executive role. Although prior non-executive experience is welcome, applications are welcome from individuals who have not held such roles before.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, but reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed. This will be a hands-on board role, it is expected that time commitment will be c. 10 - 12 days per year on average, including virtual quarterly board meetings, one in-person annual strategy day and ad hoc communication. Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year term, renewed by mutual agreement for a maximum of two further terms.


Location

Board meetings are held four times a year virtually. Additionally, there is an annual in-person strategy day held in London.
