About

St Paul’s Cathedral is a vibrant working church, a national treasure and a London icon. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the late 17th century, the Cathedral has been the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of London for over 1,400 years.

St Paul’s draws together, in its ministry and daily life, a range of activities and aspirations. Amongst other roles, it is the Cathedral of the Diocese of London and the seat of its Bishop, a national and international spiritual focus, a space for worship and holiness, a place of debate and challenge, an icon of resilience in the face of adversity, an architectural heritage centre, a partner in the City of London, a visitor attraction, and a commercial enterprise. As a Christian church, St Paul’s seeks to preach and share the Gospel, yet is also ‘owned’ by many who would profess no Christian faith. A particular theme of its vision is inclusion and diversity, and the Cathedral seeks constantly to engage with questions of how to express this appropriately in its life and work.

St Paul’s Cathedral Enterprises Limited provides financial support to St Paul’s Cathedral itself by engaging in a wide range of commercial activities, including heritage retail, corporate events and licensing. The purpose of these activities is to generate a surplus which, after the deduction of operating expenses, is donated in its entirety annually under a deed of covenant to St Paul’s for its general purposes and the furtherance of its Christian Mission.

Role specification

The Board of St Paul's Cathedral Enterprises Limited (SPCEL) provides excellent governance and strategic development.  It oversees SPCEL's commercial activities, with the purpose of generating a surplus for the Cathedral. Board Members are responsible for the long-term strategy and vision of the organisation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the delivery of the charitable aims of SPCEL as set out in the governing document
  • Agreeing and setting strategic direction for SPCEL
  • Ensuring the financial security of SPECL, and that it delivers all activities in compliance with Charities Commission and Company Law
  • Ensuring that SPCEL maintains its reputation

Person specification

Following a recent skills audit and due to the natural succession of existing Board members, St Paul's Cathedral Enterprises Limited (SPCEL) are seeking to appoint up to four new Non-Executive Directors who will be able to support and guide on the continued development of SPCEL's core revenue-generating activities.

Candidates will bring experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Retail, ideally within the non-profit or heritage sector. If gained in a commercial environment, they will be sensitive to working in a charitable context. While knowledge of e-commerce would be additive, the focus is on brick and mortar retail.
  • Corporate events and related matters, including location hire and catering. This may have been gained either from procuring these services or providing them.
  • Licensing experience, ideally with a good working knowledge of contracts, though this may have been gained operationally through trading experience rather than from a legal perspective.
  • High-level strategy development and effective implementation, from a range of leadership backgrounds, including corporate, third and strategy consultant backgrounds, with experience of interface with the type of issues above.

The Board welcomes interest from both experienced non-executives and those for whom this would be their first non-executive role.

Please note that candidates do not need to identify as members of the Christian faith, but only to have sympathy with it and with St Paul's Cathedral's work.

NEDs may bring their expertise to work on specific tasks or projects with other Board members or SMG and Chapter members as required.

The appointment is for a three-year term, which can be renewed twice at the discretion of the Board for a maximum nine-year length.

This organisation is based in London and meetings will normally take place in person. Candidates will therefore be UK-based.
