About

St John’s College School is a leading independent co-educational day and boarding school in Cambridge which offers an exceptional educational experience to boys and girls aged 4-13. It is the winner of the national Best Prep School and Best Prep School Headmaster Awards. Tracing its roots to the Seventeenth Century, St John's College School enjoys a very high reputation both regionally and nationally. Founded by St John’s College for the education of the Choristers of the College Choir, St John’s moved to its present location in one of the most attractive parts of Cambridge in 1955, and doubled in size upon amalgamation with the former Byron House School in 1973.

At the heart of the School’s success and the children’s growth, is St John’s commitment to the individual child and each pupil’s social and emotional development. It is this care and engagement with children’s learning that leads to teaching which inspectors describe as ‘inspirational.’ Care of and respect for others are fostered. Praise and encouragement, fun and kindness are emphasised. Children at St John's have opportunities to discover themselves, to challenge themselves and be challenged, to succeed and to fail, to gain mastery over their learning. The richest possible curriculum gives pupils the greatest number of pathways to excellence, the greatest opportunity to discover their value, to find their full range of talents and their particular pathway to success.

St John’s College School has recently become a charitable company, independent of St John’s College with an independent Board of Governors who are the Trustees.

Role specification

The Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing the strategy for the School and holding the Executive to account by providing proactive scrutiny of the Head and Senior Management Team. The person sought will also be a member of the Finance and General Purposes sub-committee which is responsible for overseeing budgeting and management accounts, statutory reporting and audit, Health & Safety, IT and Data Protection, estate planning, overseeing the School's investments, and monitoring the School's operational support departments reporting on those matters to the Board.

Person specification

St John's College School is seeking a new Governor to join the Board who will offer senior experience across one or more of the following areas: finance, accounting, legal or strategic commercial.

The successful candidate will bring senior experience across two or more of the areas listed above. They will have the experience and expertise to be able to influence at a senior level. They will be highly collaborative, have a strategic approach, and be able to balance seeing the bigger picture with the need to focus on the details when necessary. The candidate must be an excellent communicator, be willing to challenge appropriately, and will have the ability to guide and advise a range of stakeholders. A strong interest in independent education and an alignment with St John's nurturing and caring ethos is essential. St John's College School is committed to improving its diversity and therefore particularly encourages applications from individuals from a range of backgrounds, ages, cultures and ethnicities.

Candidates must be based in the UK and should be close enough to the School and willing to visit in-person a number of times per year.

Terms of appointment

This Trustee appointment is unremunerated, but pre-agreed reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed. The time commitment for this role consists of three Board meetings per year, and Trustees will be asked to join at least one Sub-Committee and attend an additional three meetings per year. The Trustee will also need to dedicate some time to ad hoc engagement with the Board when required. As Trustees are expected to visit the school in-person a number of times a year, the successful candidate will be UK-based. Governors shall hold office for a period of three years; any retiring Governor who remains qualified may be reappointed, provided that no Governor may serve for more than three consecutive terms of office.

The time commitment is 3 Board meetings, 3 Sub-Committee meetings, plus ad hoc events.

Diversity

St John's College School welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. As those from an ethnic minority background are currently under-represented on the Board, applications from those individuals would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the organisation may employ positive action where candidates from underrepresented groups can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.

The deadline for consideration is 14th April 2022.

If you would like to register your interest in this role, please fill in the form below. A member of the Nurole team will be in touch ahead of the deadline to let you know whether it would be worth submitting an application and to discuss the process further.
