About

Quintin Hogg Trustee Company (QHTC) is the sole trustee of two registered charities, Quintin Hogg Trust (QHT) and Quintin Hogg Memorial Fund (QHMF). The Trust and Memorial Fund were named in memory of the philanthropist Quintin Hogg, who founded the Regent Street Polytechnic, now known as the University of Westminster.

QHT’s purpose is to support the advancement of the education of students of the University of Westminster, providing grants totalling c. £5m a year to fund a wide range of projects with income derived from a portfolio of central London properties and investments. Many projects are aimed at increasing student employability and improving the student experience and involve engagement with the Students’ Union. Recent grants have been to support field trips and programmes such as ‘Westminster Working Cultures’. QHMF’s purpose is to promote wellbeing through sports participation at its facilities in Chiswick, West London for University of Westminster students and other young people.

Both charities have the same Board composition and are independent of the University. The Board of Trustees makes funding decisions on the basis of the charities’ objectives which in turn follow the principles of their founder who believed in holistic education for all students.

Role specification

The appointed Trustee will work alongside other Trustees and take responsibility for setting the charity’s values, strategic aims, objectives, and direction. They will be interested in and committed to the improvement of students’ higher education experience and their wellbeing and will have a firm belief in and commitment to the charitable objectives of the Trust. Responsibilities of the newly appointed Trustee include:

  • Providing governance of the charities for which the Trust is responsible, ensuring that it operates within its charitable objectives with a clear strategic direction
  • Assessing risks and associated opportunities, ensuring that systems are in place to take advantage of opportunities and to manage and mitigate risks
  • Conducting the affairs of QHTC (and QHT and QHMF) in a manner that is compliant with the law, accepted standards of good conduct and probity, and any applicable regulatory requirements
  • Ensuring that the charity's accounts are audited and publicly available so as to meet the relevant regulatory requirements
  • Ensuring that the charity collaborates with stakeholders to promote ethical conduct
  • Safeguarding the good name and values of the charity and ensuring that its values are reflected in all its work

Person specification

Trustee (Finance)

QHTC is seeking a Trustee with a solid understanding of general finance, audit and risk and/or investments to help support the Trusts’ Treasurer and to advise and provide scrutiny to the Board as the Trust looks to further enhance the long-term sustainability and resilience of the two trusts.

The successful candidate will have practical experience of financial and accounting practices gained by serving as a financial director or similar in a medium to large sized UK-based organisation or charity. They will have the ability to advise and monitor the financial health of the charity and work efficiently alongside the Treasurer. Ideally applicants will be financially qualified, either as a chartered accountant or have a professional qualification in accountancy and audit from an accredited and recognised institute.

In addition to sitting on the Board, it is expected that the successful candidate would become a member of the Board’s Finance and Investment Sub-committee. They would also be welcome to join one of the other three Sub-committees: Grants Committee, Governance and Nominations Committee, and the 1903 Committee which is specifically focused on day-to-day operations and future strategy of the Chiswick site.

Trustee

As QHTC looks to further enhance long-term sustainability and resilience, the Board is now looking to appoint a Trustee who is enthusiastic about improving student outcomes and has experience in one of the following areas:

Senior management in higher education: Candidates will bring a deep understanding of managing higher education and administrative issues at a senior level. They will be able to bring an external perspective to advise the Board and executive team on various educational matters, as the Trust deals regularly with the University of Westminster.

Grant-giving: Given the Trusts' role in providing grants, candidates will have a strong experience with grant-giving charities and foundations or similar.

Digital: Experience of working directly with the application of digital technology in business, which may have been gained in an IT leadership role or in an advisory capacity. Candidates will be able to contribute to Board discussions and propose new initiatives around this area of expertise.

Legal: Candidates will have experience of working directly with legal issues. Ideally, this experience might have been gained as a lawyer or as a non-lawyer with experience of soliciting legal advice. They will have the ability to provide counsel on deciding when legal advice needs to be procured.

In addition to sitting on the Board, the successful candidate would be strongly encouraged to join one of the four Sub-committees: Grants Committee, Governance and Nominations Committee, Finance and Investment, and the 1903 Committee which is specifically focused on day-to-day operations and future strategy of the Chiswick site.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, however reasonable expenses, including domestic travel, will be paid. The time commitment to the role will vary, but an average input of one or two days a month should be expected. Currently there are four Board meetings per annum, but there will be other commitments including sub-committee meetings and University events and presentations. Board meetings are held at different campuses of the University of Westminster in London, however QHTC is open to arranging hybrid meetings. The term of appointment is expected to run for a minimum of three years, with renewal options at three-year intervals up to a maximum term of nine years.

The deadline for consideration is 17th March 2022.

If you would like to register your interest in this role, please fill in the form below. A member of the Nurole team will be in touch ahead of the deadline to let you know whether it would be worth submitting an application and to discuss the process further.
