About

PraxisAuril (PrA) is the UK’s professional association for knowledge exchange based in Cambridge, UK. Knowledge Exchange (KE) is a collaborative, creative endeavour that translates knowledge and research into impact in society and the economy. PrA's purpose is to develop, promote and connect the UK’s knowledge exchange practitioners as a key element of the UK’s mission to deliver social and economic impact from its world-leading research base through a wide range of activities including new company creation, commercial partnerships and public engagement.

PrA delivers training, networking and advocacy for its members who are drawn largely from the UK’s higher education sector but also from the wider research base and associated industries. Based in the UK but global in reach, the network includes 4000+ KE practitioners from more than 182 member organisations as well as key sector stakeholders, industry service providers and business representatives. Since 2002 the Cambridge-based executive team has worked with hundreds of expert practitioner volunteers to extend the organisation’s professional development, membership and advocacy activities nationally and internationally.

With plans for strategic expansion underway, PrA is preparing for a period of change with the strength and high standards of the Board essential to future success. Celebrating over 20 years since its founding, PraxisAuril is at an exciting moment to set the tone for its next stage of growth.

Role specification

PraxisAuril seeks up to two Non-Executive Directors who share the organisation's commitment for delivering world-leading training for research commercialisation, collaboration and impact; supporting its members as a community of practice and raising PrA’s profile and influence in the UK’s research and development sector. The PraxisAuril Board defines, evolves and communicates policy and strategy, monitors and controls implementation and performance of strategic plans and programmes, and ensures corporate governance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing for and participating fully in Board and Committee meetings
  • Developing a constructive working relationship with the Chair, CEO and other NEDs
  • Providing support and guidance in areas of your particular expertise and knowledge
  • Working with the Board members to develop and implement the Company’s strategic objectives, delivering a robust and sustainable business plan
  • Acting as an ambassador for PraxisAuril, in support of its strategic goals
  • Offering an independent perspective on the overall running of the company
  • Directors are Members of the Company and are authorised to act in line with the provisions of the Companies Act 2016

Person specification

PraxisAuril is looking for up to two new Board Members to join the organisation. The successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of Board level strategic activity but able to contribute to a member-centred organisation and know how to add value as a Non-Executive. Additionally, knowledge of membership organisations, R&D, higher education and a commitment to the organisation's knowledge exchange mission is welcome.

The incoming members will have senior-level background and recent expertise in commercial or strategic roles. The Board is also open to first-time non-executives, however those with previous non-executive roles would be of particular interest to the Board.

Experience required:

  • A clear strategic thinker with a track record of success in previous NED roles, or equivalent
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to understand, analyse and communicate complex information
  • A values-driven leader who is comfortable with accountability and is equally able to play an active role in holding fellow directors to account
  • Significant P&L responsibility in an executive role at CEO or Senior Director level

PrA is interested in individuals who may not be familiar with ‘knowledge exchange’ but who believe they have the right skills and experience to contribute. The Board also welcomes expressions of interest from individuals that are under-represented in Knowledge Exchange and Higher Education leadership more broadly.

Candidates must be based in the UK.
