About

Based at Peer Place in Woking, Peer Productions' vision is to use theatre to change young people's lives. Founded in 2006, Peer Productions is an award-winning youth arts charity specialising in combining high-quality arts practice with peer education. This year it will reach 15,000 young people across the South-East of England, enabling them to change the way they think and to make positive life choices. Its work is made with, by and for young people.

Peer Productions has developed a unique approach whereby young people are at the centre of every stage of the creative process. It uses peer education and theatre to empower three separate groups of beneficiaries: young peer educators, disadvantaged project participants and young audience members.

It is an exciting time for growth at Peer Productions, as it plans to double its cohort size for its new Peer Employment Pathway programme for young adults with SEND (Special Educational Needs or Disability) this September, and having expanded into a larger new space leased from Woking Borough Council. The coming months and years will present lots of opportunities for expanding impact, income generation, and capital development.

Role specification

The Treasurer is responsible for the strategic oversight of all financial transactions and fundraising for the Charity, and ensuring good financial practice and governance is in place.

Responsibilities include to:

  • Lead the Board's duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept, and that financial resources are controlled, invested and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee the Charity's financial risk-management process and report financial health to the Board of Trustees at regular intervals
  • Act as a financial counter signatory and ensure that annual accounts are submitted to all relevant regulators in a timely fashion
  • Along with Strategy & Partnerships Director, liaise with external auditors on financial issues and ensure that the Charity's finances are responsibly managed for the achievement of the charitable objectives
  • Review all management accounts to ensure a high standard of accounting is maintained in order to safeguard assets
  • In partnership with Strategy & Partnerships Director, develop reserves policy to safeguard the organisation's finances

Person specification

Peer Productions is seeking a senior-level financial leader to become its new Treasurer. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of financial, risk and governance systems, gained by serving at a senior level in either a commercial organisation or charity. Candidates do not need to be qualified accountants, but will have held responsibility for finance in their role, for example as a CFO or a Finance Director. They will have operated at the strategic level and therefore will bring experience of strategic planning and general business management.

Peer Productions is particularly interested in candidates who have experience of capital development projects, as it considers how to make best use of its new building space, which includes a currently empty floor with permission to renovate. This experience may have been gained in either an executive or non-executive capacity and candidates do not need to have held previous non-executive positions.

The new Treasurer will ideally be familiar with charity accounting requirements and regulations, and charity fundraising practices, however Peer Productions is open to candidates who have not worked within the charity sector previously.

Most importantly, candidates should be committed to Peer Productions' mission of transforming young people's lives through theatre.
