January 2022

<< Back to events page

Nurole hosted a webinar which focused on how to secure an education board position through Nurole. The webinar featured Oliver Cummings, Conor Wilson, and Brigitte Stundner, respectively Nurole CEO, Education Consultant and Education Client Success Lead. It will give you the information you need to identify which roles to apply for and apply effectively thereafter, as well as assessing the benefits of an education board position in the context of a more commercial NED career. You can find a recording of the webinar below, along with a summary of insights from the discussion.

5 key event insights

  • Educational organisations can give you the experience required for compensated roles. They operate with complex funding models and multiple stakeholders, often across multiple campuses with nuanced operational needs, and under heavy regulation. All of this hones readily transferable skills.
  • Successful candidates tend to have a strong "reason for application". Candidate passion matters for board hirers because it means they will add more value to the board. Make sure that you clearly articulate why education matters to you as well as the unique appeal of the educational board you are applying for.
  • There is greater demand for digital expertise. Covid catalysed educational digitisation but the trend is continuing at a similar pace after the pandemic has passed. Our clients are looking for digital skills, and there is a premium of ed-tech experience. Relatedly, expertise in young people's mental health - particularly in relation to digitisation - is hugely valuable.
  • Education boards are embracing younger candidates and improving their onboarding. We are placing more and more candidates in their 30s and 40s, with relevant executive strategic experience. Relatedly, organisations across the sector are offering much better onboarding and development, including mentoring, shadowing, peer support and 1-2-1s with the Chair.
  • New government policy has created a strong appetite for M&A, growth and commercial experience on education boards. Current policy dictates that all schools must become multi-academy trusts by 2030. There is already a huge amount of growth and consolidation happening as a result, and this is placing a premium on the above-mentioned skills.
