About the Media Trust

  • Media Trust is the UK's leading communications charity. It believes that giving everyone a voice will pave the way to a more equal society. That’s why the charity works in partnership with the media and creative industry to give charities, under-represented communities and young people a stronger voice. It does this through media and communications training for charities delivered with the help of its industry partners and by matching charities looking for communications support with industry volunteers. Meanwhile, Media Trust's youth programmes provide young people largely from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds with the creative digital media and employability skills, confidence and mentoring to break into the media. Through all these initiatives, Media Trust is contributing to a more level playing field for media representation.

  • Founded in 1994, Media Trust is an ambitious charity, full of passionate people. Su-Mei Thompson joined as CEO four years ago, bringing a wealth of experience in the charity and media sectors having previously held CEO roles at The Women’s Foundation in Hong Kong and at leading media organisations.

  • The charity has an extensive network of long-standing media and creative industry partners including Amazon, Ascential, BBC, BBH, Bloomberg, Channel 4, Facebook, Google, Guardian Media Group, ITV, Twitter, Verizon, Viacom, and Warner Media among several others, who it works closely with to deliver its programmes.

Role specification

  • Media Trust has a committed Trustee Board and is always looking to bring in different perspectives and areas of expertise that will complement and strengthen its existing skill set and experience.

  • All Trustees are responsible for ensuring that Media Trust acts in the interest of the charities and young people it serves, and in line with its charitable objects, and must ensure that performance is evaluated with regard to this. In addition to formal Board meetings, Trustees should be willing to undertake informal engagement with the organisation, including providing advice on an ad hoc basis on particular matters. It is an advantage, though not a requirement, if trustees have contacts who are interested in supporting Media Trust’s aims.

Person specification

  • For these appointments, Media Trust is especially looking for expertise within the charity sector. The ideal candidates would bring an informed perspective from within Media Trust's main beneficiary groups – smaller charities, under-represented communities and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds; for this reason, candidates are likely to have held charity leadership roles within organisations serving these groups, and will therefore be able to share insight into the charitable sector's priorities with the Board.

  • The Finance Trustee will also serve as Treasurer and will chair quarterly Finance & Audit Committee, overseeing financial and audit policies and practices, offering advice and best practice with regard to financial controls, reserves policy and risk management. For this reason, a financial or accounting qualification is essential, and a background or understanding of charity finance would be a distinct advantage.

  • For the second Trustee vacancy, functional expertise of marketing or communications within the charitable sector would be especially useful in helping Media Trust hone its offering to serve its target beneficiary groups. Likewise, a track record of successful fundraising from foundations, grants or donors would be very welcome in helping the Board and leadership team best position the charity as an attractive prospect for funding support.

  • Media Trust is open to appointing candidates for whom this would be their first board role, and is strongly committed to broadening the Board's diversity across every axis. Please refer to the Diversity section below for more information.

Diversity

Media Trust welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. Media Trust is particularly keen to improve the diversity of its Board and ensure that it is representative of the organisations and communities which Media Trust serves. As women and those from an ethnic minority background are currently under-represented on the Board, applications from those candidates would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process, overseen by its Nominations Committee. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the organisation may employ positive action where diverse candidates can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.

Terms of appointment

  • Media Trust holds four Board meetings per year which last around 1.5 hours and in addition to this, time commitment will include preparation and additional ad hoc support. There is also an opportunity depending on skills and experience for the new Trustees to join the Board committees. The Finance & Audit Committee meet four times a year for c. 1-1.5 hours each time while the Nominations Committee meets on a more ad hoc as required basis.

  • There is also the option to join the Advisory Board for a specific programme, depending on interest, relevance and availability. Board meetings are usually held in Central London and are hosted at the offices of the charity's Trustees. Media Trust is open to hybrid working and there will be the option to join these meetings remotely. Previously, FAC meetings have been hosted at the charity's Treasurer’s offices within London, or at the charity’s offices in Victoria.

The deadline for consideration is 29th November 2021.

If you would like to register your interest, please fill in the form below. A member of the Nurole team will be in touch ahead of the deadline to let you know whether it would be worth submitting a full application and to discuss the process further.
