The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is renowned for its research, postgraduate studies and continuing education in public and global health. Role specification

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) Council has established a Committee of the governing body known as the Audit and Risk Committee. It is the role of the Audit and Risk Committee to advise and assist the governing body in respect of the entire assurance, control and risk environment of the institution.

The Committee oversees LSHTM’s arrangements for external and internal audit, financial control and risk management, providing assurances in these key areas through its annual report to Council, which is shared with the Office for Students (OfS) and, by request, with Research England.

Person specification

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is looking for someone who is financially qualified and has operated in the public sector or higher education to join its Audit & Risk Committee.

Given the majority private sector background of the current Committee, candidates will bring a strong understanding of financial management best practice in the the public sector or higher education, as well as its unique funding and academic structures. This could have been gained in a variety of roles, including those covering finance, audit or risk. Applicants should, however, be mindful of potential conflicts; those, for example, currently operating in higher education institutions undertaking similar research to LSHTM may cause a conflict.

Candidates will be committed to LSHTM's mission to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide, and appreciate how research and education can achieve this.


Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, and reasonable, pre-agreed domestic travel expenses will be reimbursed. The Audit & Risk Committee meets four times per year; twice in Autumn Term, and once in Spring and Summer Term. There is also an annual away day. Preference is for all meetings to be face to face but virtual attendance can be facilitated if not possible. Each meeting lasts for around two hours, normally from 14:00 to 16:00. The away day is normally four hours either in the morning or afternoon. The appointment is for a three-year term, which can be renewed once.


Location

This organisation is based in London and meetings will usually take place in person; virtual attendance can be accommodated.
