About

Situated in the historic city of Worcester, The King’s Worcester Foundation of Schools inspires children aged 2-18 to aim higher, shaping their character to go further, and instilling the values to lead lives of purpose. King's Worcester is renowned for its unwavering commitment to academic excellence, holistic development, and a nurturing educational environment; since its founding in 1541, it has continued to evolve with the times, and now thrives as a modern independent institution, blending tradition with forward-looking thinking.

The Foundation comprises a family of leading day schools including the Senior School, King’s Worcester, and two Prep Schools based across two beautiful sites, King’s St Alban’s and King’s Hawford. Attracting over 1,300 children from the local area and its near surroundings, King's Worcester provides an inspirational education, helping girls and boys thrive and reach their true potential.

At King's Worcester, five core values underpin every aspect of school life: ambition, resilience, humility, creativity and kindness. With the school occupying a central position within the community, King's alumni go on to maintain close relationships with their alma mater, and many choose to send their own children to the school when the time comes. Outside of its strong academic results, King's Worcester places great emphasis on character development, nurturing resilience, compassion, and leadership skills within its students. It fosters a supportive and inclusive community, where each individual is encouraged to thrive according to their own strengths.

The school's picturesque campus provides high-quality facilities including a new sixth-form centre opening this coming September, enabling a stimulating and engaging learning environment. Whilst operating in a competitive commercial environment and in the context of increasing pressures on the independent schools sector, King's continues to maintain strong pupil numbers, and with a recently-appointed Head, is entering an exciting phase of strategic development. With a rich heritage spanning more than five centuries, King's Worcester School stands as a testament to its enduring reputation as a leading educational establishment.

Role specification

King's Worcester's Governors oversee all three schools within the King’s Foundation. They come from a wide range of backgrounds, including business, education, and specialist professions, to bring together the diverse range of skills and experiences required to manage a family of leading independent schools; their prime responsibility is to ensure that the School provides the best education for its pupils, and adheres to its charitable objectives.

Governors focus on the three core functions of governance:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  2. Holding executive leaders to account
  3. Overseeing and ensuring effective educational and financial performance

All Governors sit on at least one Committee, chosen according to where their skillset will be most useful.

Person specification

Governor (Education)

With a view to ensuring the right balance of skills on the Board, King's Worcester is now looking for a new Governor with a background in education, who will play a key role both on the Education Committee and the main Board in ensuring the school is providing the young people it serves with the best possible educational experience.

The right candidate will have deep experience within the education sector, with exposure to the independent sector being of particular interest. They will have held education leadership roles (e.g. Head Teacher), or may have acted in a senior capacity as a consultant to the sector.

Governor (Strategy)

King's Worcester is looking to bring on a passionate and committed Governor with a strong strategic mindset, who may in time go on to step into the role of Chair.

Owing to the current skills balance on the Board and the school's current phase of strategic development, the right candidate is likely to have experience within the commercial sector. Beyond this, the Board is open-minded as to the professional background of this individual, but regardless of sector or functional background, they will be a strong strategic professional, comfortable in a leadership role and able to act as a critical friend both to the school Head and the other Governors.

Strong connections to the city of Worcester would be an advantage, and whilst not necessary, previous non-executive experience may be a differentiator between candidates.

Governor (Digital)

As King's Worcester strives to stay on the front foot in the rapidly-changing digital world, it would value the perspective of a Governor with experience in digital strategy, who will be comfortable leading Boardroom discussions on related subjects including edtech, IT infrastructure and cybersecurity. Perhaps with a professional background as a Chief Information Officer or Digital / IT Consultant, they will provide an informed and current perspective on the evolving technological environment, ensuring that King's Worcester is well-placed to capitalise on the opportunities it presents.

Like all Governors, the new appointees will share in a commitment to helping this historic institution continue to thrive in the 21st century, and to ensuring its students have the best possible experience in their time at King's Worcester.

This is a voluntary position.
