About

KidsRights, founded in 2003 in the Netherlands, is an international non-governmental organisation that promotes the wellbeing of vulnerable children across the world and advocates for the realisation of their rights. KidsRights strives for a world where all children have access to their rights and are empowered to realise the great potential they carry within them. KidsRights sees children as ‘changemakers’ who have the power to move the world and facilitates them in voicing their opinions and in taking action to bring about change. It is now establishing a new arm in the UK.

KidsRights supports children by commanding global attention for the realisation of children’s rights and acting as a catalyst to ignite change, together with children and youth. This advocacy is supported with research and action:

  • Advocacy: The International Children’s Peace Prize (ICPP) is awarded annually to a child who fights courageously for children’s rights. Since the inception of the International Children’s Peace Prize, there have been 19 ICPP winners from 17 different countries, on 5 different continents
  • Research: The KidsRights Index is the only global ranking that annually measures how children’s rights are respected worldwide and to what extent countries are committed in improving the rights of children. It comprises a ranking of all UN member states that have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and for which sufficient data is available. As of 2022 a total of 185 countries are part of the Index. KidsRights also provides a scientific background to our programs to improve international children’s rights. In 2022 KidsRight's research reached over 3.2 billion people
  • Action: The State of Youth is the world’s first online State. Through a tech-based approach it reaches and unites youth all over the world, even in the most remote areas. Through quarterly referendums youth gives their views and ideas on the most pressing current global issues. KidsRights then enables them to develop community based action plans. Through a toolkit and blended training, youth can set up their own State of Youth chapter. In 2022, State of Youth had 203 Chapters in 43 different countries. This means State of Youth reached 19 new countries in the past year. KidsRights also finances local projects aimed at directly improving the rights of vulnerable children and stimulating child participation and changemaking by youths

Role specification

KidsRights UK are looking for a Treasurer to join its new Board of Trustees. The Board will be collectively responsible for ensuring that KidsRights UK is progressing towards its charitable aim.

The Treasurer will work with other members of the Board in ensuring that resources are managed effectively and that the organisation is satisfying all regulatory and legal compliance requirements. In addition, they will provide support and guidance regarding KidsRights UK’s forecasts and budgets, strategic financial planning and financial management systems and policies.

As a member of the Board, they will also fulfil the general responsibilities of a Trustee which include to:

  • Determine the overall strategic direction and development of KidsRights UK, by agreeing organisational policies, budgets and objectives, and to ensure targets are set and performance measured against such targets
  • Safeguard and promote the good name, reputation, vision, mission and values of KidsRights UK and to ensure the charity complies with its governing documents, relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Take collective responsibility for Board decisions, including the avoidance of any personal conflict of interest and to hold the Executive to account
  • Contribute any specific skills, knowledge or experience which they may have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of KidsRights UK and its financial stability
  • Represent KidsRights UK at functions and events, and help identify fundraising opportunities as they arise
  • Engage with international stakeholders to keep informed about the organisation's activities and wider issues that affect KidsRights UK's work

Person specification

KidsRights UK are seeking someone with senior-level finance experience to become Treasurer. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of financial, risk and governance systems, gained by serving at a senior level in a organisation or charity. They do not need to be a qualified accountant but will have held responsibility for finances in their role, for example as a CFO or a Finance Director. They will therefore have the ability to advise on and monitor the financial health of KidsRights UK as they establish themselves as a new arm of KidsRights.

KidsRights UK are open-minded about the sector that candidates may have gained their experience in, but are particularly interested in candidates who have experience of charity fundraising. This may have been in either an executive or non-executive capacity. Candidates do not need to have held previous non-executive positions.

Most importantly though, candidates will be committed to KidsRights UK's vision for a world where all children have access to their rights and are empowered to realise the great potential they carry within them.
