Role specification

The Board of Trustees is the governing body which administers the charity. Dementia UK's Board of Trustees guides the direction and management of the charity and all major decisions are made by the Board. Trustees work closely with staff and meet regularly throughout the year to review and formulate strategies and policies for all areas of the organisation.

All Trustees add energy, purpose and substance to the team. They ensure that Dementia UK complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations. They contribute actively by setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against those targets, as well as ensuring the financial stability of Dementia UK.

The new Trustee will use their specific skillset and relevant experience to help the Board make strategic decisions and expand its reach. They will have a strong alignment with the vision and mission of the charity and pro-actively help to work towards its success and growth.

In addition to the formal Board meetings, Trustees are willing to undertake informal engagement with the charity, including providing advice on an ad hoc basis to the management team, and engaging with them to promote the culture of the charity. Trustees also use their specific knowledge and experience to help the Board reach sound decisions, assist the senior leadership team with advice as required, and be informed and supportive of the organisation's activities.


Person specification

Dementia UK is a sizeable charity which has grown rapidly in recent years. A major factor for its growth has been its fundraising and income generation activities. This includes individual giving, legacy, corporate fundraising, challenge events, foundations, remembrance funds and the Dementia UK lottery, amongst much more. 

As part of its strategy moving forward to keep up with the growth, the charity is looking for a Trustee who will be able to provide oversight and guidance on the charity's fundraising activities. They will bring senior-level strategic fundraising experience and will be able to advise on the current charity's fundraising activities and how it may do things differently. They will bring a level of fundraising experience that will allow them to assess the current return on investment of the charity's fundraising efforts and help steer it in the right direction. 

The successful candidate will be able to act as a sounding board for the Director of Fundraising and Engagement. They will have a demonstrable track record of strategising funding for a charitable organisation, including donor introductions, engagement and development.

Lastly, the candidate will be collaborative and comfortable operating at a strategic level with senior stakeholders and Board members. Importantly, they will also have a strong interest in the charity's work and mission.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, but reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed. The appointment is for a three-year term, which may be renewed twice.


Location

There are four Board meetings per year, held in London. These are typically from 11am to 3pm and are in person. There are four Fundraising Committee meetings that are held via video call.
