Role specification

As representatives of the Chartered Insurance Institute, Institute Directors of the Personal Finance Society (PFS) Board (as opposed to a Member Directors) ensure the long-term strategic direction of the PFS, whilst appreciating its relationship to overall Group interests.

Individuals will be experienced in ensuring the long-term success of the organisation operating at board level within more complex Group structures. CII are looking for those who are able to support the long-term success of the CII and PFS by ensuring sound governance on all matters at PFS board level with the intelligence and integrity to challenge as appropriate and achieve timely resolution.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the PFS Board to achieve its strategic objectives consistent with its strategy (and aligned to the CII Group strategy)
  • Assessing internal and external factors which impact upon strategy; thinking about ‘future proofing’ strategies – not just present-day issues – often by discussion with external organisations that represent best practice
  • Understanding the positions of the PFS and CII in the larger world context; conveying a thorough understanding of the organisation's / directorate's / division’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats; identify competitive differentiators
  • Managing relationships among key outside organisations and government entities to create long-range opportunities; using established networks of relationships to seek information of strategic importance and to seek a position of influence
  • Building effective, mutually beneficial relationships with key external stakeholders
  • Assessing issues – including long-term, medium-term and short-term factors; making decisions which are clear and practice
  • Taking responsibility for a significant budget; understanding the link between resource use and output; acting as an efficient and effective custodian of resources; pre-empting issues and take corrective actions as required

Person specification

The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) is looking to appoint experienced Non-Executive Directors to serve as Institute Directors on the Board of The Personal Finance Society, the largest society within the CII group. Candidates will bring at least three years of experience operating as an effective Non-Executive Director and will evidence demonstrable experience of navigating complexity, and will be familiar with governance matters within group entities at board level, ideally from having previously served on a subsidiary board.

Candidates will bring a demonstrable track record of delivering change management initiatives, either as an executive or non-executive. They will also have prior experience within the insurance or personal finance sector, but this does not need to have been within an executive position, or within the last five years.

As part of a broader board rotation, CII is looking to make complimentary appointments. As such, CII is open to candidates from a variety of functional leadership backgrounds.

Terms of appointment

This role is remunerated. For the entities for which the candidate is being considered, the time commitment is estimated at around two days per month, inclusive of board meetings, group-level engagement and ad hoc meetings / calls. The appointment will be for a 12-month period.
