About

Beachborough School is set in an idyllic location on the edge of the village of Westbury, providing a traditional yet innovative education for over 370 boys and girls aged 2 - 13. The School encourages children to challenge themselves without fear of failure, to try new things and be open to a wide range of experiences. Give each child opportunities and encouragement, then watch them blossom.

In September 2023 the School welcomed a new Headmistress, Simone Mitchell, marking the beginning of an exciting new stage in the development of the School.

Nestled in 35 acres of beautiful grounds, sports fields and woods on the Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire borders, the School's modern facilities cluster around the attractive old stone Manor House reflecting the balance between tradition and innovation that characterises the School. The education Beachborough provides combines modern ideas and state-of-the-art facilities, like the new ‘Technology, Engineering and Design’ (TED) suite, with rigorous teaching and old-fashioned values such as diligence, kindness and good manners. At whatever stage a child joins the School, be it in Beachborough's Early Years (2½ to 4 years), Pre-Prep (5 to 7 years) or Prep School (8 to 13 years), they will benefit enormously from the Beachborough adventure.

Beachborough is committed to an education that has the wellbeing of each child at its heart; to develop individuals who thrive and flourish in the fullest sense. It aims to equip its children to be happy and confident, form lasting relationships with others and develop strategies for coping with the challenges life throws at them – essential skills for succeeding in today’s complex, fast-moving world. Children from Form lll upwards have the option of staying the night in Kites, the School's cosy Boarding House, whenever they like; this fosters their independence, strengthens their friendships and gives them the experience for boarding at senior school. With water fights, movie nights, BBQs and games in the woods – boarding nights at Beachborough might just be the best sleepovers they ever have! The School offers a flexible boarding provision to not only benefit children’s personal development but to also meet the needs of busy professional parents during the week.

Beachborough School is regularly inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). The School was thrilled and delighted that its most recent inspection - which took place in November 2018 - gave the School the highest possible rating of Excellent In All Areas. You can read more about the School's most recent inspection here.

Role specification

Beachborough School is governed by a Board of Governors whose prime responsibility is to ensure that the School provides the best education for its pupils. The Board has a duty to ensure its charitable objectives are adhered to. It comprises a group of people who voluntarily contribute a varied and differing range of experiences and skills applicable to the functions of the School.

Governors focus on the three core functions of governance:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding executive leaders to account
  • Overseeing and ensuring effective educational and financial performance

Person specification

Governance at Beachborough is a function characterised by passion, rigour and professionalism. The board is undergoing a process of refreshment, with new members having joined in early Summer 2023.

Governor (Edtech)

As Beachborough moves to a new phase of strategic planning with the arrival of the new Head in September 2023, education, technology and digital learning is set to form a key pillar within the next planning cycle. This Governor will help the Board and the wider teaching community to bring together the innovations in edtech which have already been a success, such as the TED suite and engineering projects. Additionally, they will support the School's aspirations, including achieving Microsoft Certified status and implementing personal devices for all Senior students.

The ideal candidate will be someone steeped in educational technology. They could come from a wide range of backgrounds, whether a founder of an edtech business, an investor in the sector, an academic with a research interest in the space, or a practitioner leveraging edtech as they work directly with learners. They will play a crucial horizon scanning role for Beachborough, keeping their finger on the pulse when it comes to trends and developments in the edtech sector.

Governor (Health & Safety)

The Board now seeks a new Governor with a senior background in Health & Safety to advise on, and ensure that, best practice is adhered to and that high quality policies and procedures remain in place. In recent times, health and safety has assumed a more central role in the life of the School. This shift is in response to the regulator, ISI, as well as part of the School's evolving commitment to quality. This Governor will provide high challenge and high support to the executive around matters of health & safety, as well as advising based on industry standards.

The successful candidate could have a compliance-led, or, traditional health & safety background. The Board is open to individuals from the world of education, from other regulated industries or commercial settings. This person will join a dedicated Health & Safety Committee.

Above all, candidates will be aligned with Beachborough's mission to create a positive learning experience for pupils, both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring they are fully prepared socially and intellectually for the challenges ahead.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, and reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed. There are three Board meetings per year (once per term) which last two to three hours and tend to take place at 4pm on a weekday at the School, with an optional dinner afterwards. The Health and Safety Governor will need to attend the Health & Safety Committee which also meets once per term, on weekdays from 2-5pm. The Edtech Governor may be asked to Chair a newly formed Edtech Committee.

There will also be ad hoc communication with the Board and school visits. This appointment is for a four year term, which can be renewed twice at the discretion of the Board up to a maximum of twelve years.

Location

As Board meetings take place in person at Beachborough School, candidates will either be local to Northamptonshire or willing to travel.

Diversity

Beachborough welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. It is committed to equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practices and it positively encourages applications from all sectors of the community. As those from ethnic minority backgrounds and people aged under 45 are currently under-represented on the Board, applications from those candidates would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process.
