About

Since its foundation in 2011, Academy Transformation Trust (ATT) has grown to its current family of 21 academies (primary, secondary, post-16 and FE, and one special school) operating across the East, South East, East Midlands and West Midlands. ATT is responsible for the education of over 13,500 learners, for the careers of almost 2,000 colleagues, and for the most effective spending of over £80m of taxpayer income each year. The Trust's vision is to transform the lives of its learners, its staff, and the communities it serves. It encapsulates that ambition in one simple slogan: #TransformingLives.

The Trust's four key values are:

  • Commitment to education — ATT's core purpose is to positively impact the lives of all its learners. Education will always be at the heart of everything it does
  • Innovation and improvement — ATT is committed to innovative education — always moving forward and never standing still. Its learners are ambitious and prepared for a future that is constantly changing and developing
  • Transparency and integrity — ATT is proud of its success whilst being open and honest about its areas for improvement. Its actions are always ethical and in the best interests of all its stakeholders
  • Dedication to inclusivity — ATT's learners are all different and all are important to it. It aspires to support, challenge, and help each one of them reach their full potential, regardless of their background or level of ability

Role specification

Trustees are accountable for the strategic direction of the Trust, the effective financial management and the educational performance of the academies. Trustees are non-executive and work strategically alongside a highly effective executive leadership team led by the new CEO, Sir Nick Weller. The Trustees are also Directors of the Trust, which is a company limited by guarantee and registered as such at Companies House. Trustees are required to take collective responsibility for all aspects of the Board’s work — while specific skills areas are sought, it is expected that strategy development and accountability rests with all Trustees.

Person specification

Trustee (Finance / Audit)

The successful candidate will be financially qualified with a strong understanding of financial, including risk, management. They could be, for example, a current or former CFO, Finance Director, or an Audit Partner in a Big Four firm. However, the Board is open to a variety of different backgrounds. The successful candidate will be able to leverage their knowledge of finance in a governance setting, challenging Board members when appropriate, and asking the right questions.

Trustee (Legal / HR)

The successful candidate will be able to advise on areas such as employment law, safeguarding and dispute resolution. They may come from a HR or Legal background. Experience in the education sector would be desirable but not essential.

HR — applicants will bring strategic-level leadership experience within the HR function, for example as an HR Director or a Director of People.

Legal — applicants will be leaders from within the legal profession, such as a Partner in a law firm, or a General Counsel within an organisation.

Above all, the successful candidates will be strong collaborators, offering advice and support as well as being able to provide effective challenge where necessary. They will also be passionate about ATT's mission to transform lives by putting education first.

Board composition

A list of current Trustees and local academy committee chairs can be found here.

Terms of appointment

There are four Board meetings, which Trustees can attend either in person or virtually. Additionally, each Trustee will be expected to sit on one of the Board's Committees, which meet between three and six times per year either virtually or in a hybrid format. The appointment is for a four-year term, renewable once. The role is unremunerated but reasonable, pre-agreed expenses will be reimbursed.

Location

Trustees need not be locally based, but will actively commit to the role.

Diversity

Academy Transformation Trust welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. As female, BAME, and younger people are currently under-represented on the Board, applications from those candidates would be particularly welcomed. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the organisation may employ positive action where candidates from underrepresented groups can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.

The deadline for consideration is 25 January 2023. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place on 1st February 2023.

If you would like to register your interest in this role, please fill in the form below. A member of the Nurole team will be in touch ahead of the deadline to let you know whether it would be worth submitting an application and to discuss the process further.
