About

A Million Realities Foundation (AMR) is a charity which wants to equip leadership with the skills to approach systemic problems effectively, so it can find sustainable solutions fit for our world. It has therefore created a comprehensive, two-year fellowship programme designed to bring together, champion and support bold and bright individuals. Its mission is to find tomorrow’s revolutionary social impact leaders, who will bring about systemic social change.

Founded by philanthropist Antonia Packard, who serves as Chair, and is supported by a small yet growing team, AMR is newly registered with the Charity Commission and lucky enough to be endowed so doesn't need to fundraise. It has already run two successful transformational programmes with cohorts of changemakers, after which it has spent the past nine months in review, research and development. AMR is now building up to the launch of the most ambitious programme to date, which will include changemakers, philanthropists and policy makers as part of a collaborative cohort.

Looking ahead, each cohort will focus on a new mission. The upcoming one will address the systems which touch the lives of adolescents as they transition into adulthood - for example, in the area of education and adolescent mental health. AMR also hopes to increase its impact, by not only giving leaders the many tools they need (emotionally, psychologically, and practically) to make change happen, but also support further collaboration. It is exploring other ways of sharing knowledge and expertise, including content, events and shorter taster programmes, so it can support even more future leaders to make large scale social change.

Role specification

The important role of a Trustee is to ensure that the A Million Realities Foundation fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries through its charitable activities and delivers on its vision, mission and values. Working together, Trustees also:

  • Ensure that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives
  • Contribute actively to the Board's role in giving strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • Safeguard the good name and values of the organisation, as well as its financial stability
  • Make full use of any specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the Board make good decisions

Person specification

As it looks to bring its support and expertise to ever more future leaders, A Million Realities is looking for a senior marketing / communications strategist to join the Board.

Candidates may have gained this in either an agency setting or in house. Some exposure to the third or public sector, or issues around behaviour change, would be particularly welcome. They will be able to guide the charity as it looks to share its expertise and impact with a broader audience, becoming more externally-facing and collaborative in the way it works. Applicants will be comfortable working with a small team, being able to adapt their advice accordingly, and not scared of challenges or doing things differently. They will also be able to balance tact and diplomacy with a willingness to challenge and act as a critical friend.

On a personal level, the successful candidate will be aligned with AMR’s view that there needs to be a radical, systems-level approach to social impact. They will be committed to the charity’s objects, aims and values.

Terms of appointment

The role of Trustee is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel may be claimed. There are four Board meetings per year, as well as one development day, where the AMR team experiences a programme taster, and an annual charity celebration event, at the end of the two year programme. Beyond this, there are quarterly remote marketing and communications strategy meetings with the AMR executive team.

Location

Most Board meetings will be conducted remotely over Zoom. On ad hoc occasions, Trustees will be required to travel to London for an AMR event.

The deadline for consideration is - 30th November 2023.
