About

Established in 2012, the Wembley Multi-Academy Trust (WMAT) has been dedicated to the pursuit of educational excellence. Over the years, WMAT has flourished as the steward of a close-knit family of distinguished schools, namely East Lane Primary School and Wembley High Technology College, both proudly holding an 'Outstanding' Ofsted rating. In response to growing parental demand, WMAT expanded its commitment to exceptional education by opening North Brent School in 2020, on Wembley High Technology College premises.

Through its unwavering dedication to its WMAT values, the Trust stands at the forefront of fostering holistic development and academic success for students within the Wembley community. WMAT provides a highly academic curriculum and a disciplined environment, empowering students to attain the highest qualifications possible. The Trust is committed to transforming students' lives by facilitating their access to higher education, striving to improve the life chances of its diverse student body and fostering success, citizenship, and leadership.

With families from various parts of the world, the Trust shares their high aspirations for the children and actively cultivates a multicultural environment, shaping students as global citizens. Positioned as a financially robust and future-proof Trust, WMAT is dedicated to sustainable excellence, ensuring top-tier education and optimal outcomes for all pupils. With a commitment to staff development through career progression and retention packages, WMAT actively shares its expertise and offers comprehensive support for continuous improvement across all facets of school operations.

As WMAT looks to the future, it welcomes new Members to join in this exciting time, inviting collaboration and fresh perspectives to guide the Trust on its new journey. This presents an opportunity for individuals to contribute actively to the growth and success of WMAT, shaping the educational landscape for the benefit of all its students.

Role specification

Members of the Supervisory Board should provide oversight and scrutiny across the work of the Trustee Board. They create a clear separation between the role and work of the Trustee and Member Board.

Members play a limited but crucial role in safeguarding academy trust governance. They should not stray into undertaking The Academies' Trustees' role but should assure themselves that the governance of the trust is effective, that The Academies' Trustees are acting in accordance with the trust’s charitable object(s) and that they, the Members, use their powers to step in if governance is failing.

Most notably, Members are responsible for defining the Trust’s charitable object, amending the articles of association, appointing or removing Trustees, appointing the Trust’s auditors and receiving the Trust’s annual audited accounts, and ultimately dissolving the academy trust if required.

Person specification

WMAT is looking for up to five new Members who can actively contribute to the success of the Trust. Candidates will bring previous experience in corporate or charity governance and should have a demonstrable background in leadership roles with strategic vision and knowledge of the Non-Executive Director role.

Candidates can come from a range of different sectors, such as public, private, not-for-profit or higher education, but they will have gained diverse board or governance experience. In addition, the Board is interested in candidates with expertise in media, communications or public relations.

The ideal candidate should possess a deep understanding of the Trust's ethos and demonstrates the ability to contribute actively to the collaborative and cohesive functioning of the Board. They will bring a strong sense of connection and teamwork, actively guiding the Trust in its ongoing journey. Beyond compliance, WMAT is looking for individuals who can actively contribute to shaping the Board, fostering a sense of connection, and promoting effective teamwork.

Members will play a crucial role in guiding WMAT on its journey of educational excellence and community impact. Successful individuals should be strong communicators, collegial and be passionate about education and the mission of WMAT. They will be aligned to its values of: integrity, respect, diversity, student achievement, and collaboration.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated and reasonable, and pre-agreed domestic travel expenses will be reimbursed. In addition, Members are expected to read board reports and statements.  The AGM is held in a hybrid format.

Appointments are for a four-year term and can be renewable, subject to the Board's discretion.

Diversity

WMAT welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, belief or disability. As those from an ethnic minority background are currently under-represented on the Board, applications from those individuals would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the organisation may employ positive action where candidates from underrepresented groups can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.
