About

With origins tracing back to 1840, Nightingale Hammerson is a specialist charity offering residential, dementia and nursing care for the elderly in the Jewish community.

The charity has two care homes, both based in London. Nightingale House, rated 'Outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission, is located in Clapham and is home to over 150 residents. Hammerson House Wohl Campus, currently rated 'Good', was opened in Spring 2021 in Hampstead Garden Suburb and will be home to 116 residents.

With 180 years of care excellence, Nightingale Hammerson has a proven track record of innovative residential care that enhances the lives of residents. Nightingale House is believed to be the first home in the world to establish a children’s nursery on site, bringing the young and old together on a daily basis. The homes provide an extensive activities programme, with an Activities Centre which gives each day a purpose, and residents a chance to maintain hobbies or learn new ones. The charity has also invested significantly in developing its care teams in order to understand and apply the true definition of person-centred care, taking into account the individual wishes, characters and histories of everyone it looks after.

Role specification

The successful candidate will join the Board as a Trustee and Joint Treasurer, and will co-chair the Finance Committee with the other Joint Treasurer. Both Joint Treasurers will be expected to be aware of the Financial Risks and Investments.

In this role, the Joint Treasurer will be responsible for maintaining an overview of Nightingale Hammerson's financial affairs. They will have oversight of matters relating to the charity’s financial viability and risk management, including its adherence in these areas to good practice, the Memorandum and Articles of Association, and legal requirements.

The Treasurer will also work closely with the executive team to ensure the financial stability of the charity. Alongside other Trustees, they will serve as a steward of the charity's resources and will be responsible for Nightingale Hammerson's strategy, operations, adherence to law and regulation, and financial management.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Joint Treasurer include:

  • Ensuring that sufficient information is received by the Finance Committee so as to allow it to maintain a clear picture of the financial situation of the Charity and any substantial changes thereto and keeping the Board apprised of the same
  • Presenting the Annual Budget and the Annual Report and Accounts for approval by the Board
  • Acting as authorised signatory on bank and investment accounts
  • Working closely with the other joint Treasurer to ensure co-ordination and effectiveness of the Finance Committee
  • Maintaining a strong, open relationship with the Charity’s Finance Director, ensuring an appropriate balance of support and challenge
  • Carrying out duties in line with the Terms of Reference of the Finance Committee (available upon request)

Person specification

Nightingale Hammerson seeks a new Trustee to join its Board as a Joint Treasurer. The successful candidate will be a motivated and financially-skilled individual who can help continue to build the charity's impact and navigate the next stage in its development. They will preferably be a qualified accountant, or possess a financial qualification of equal merit. However, the charity is also open to receiving applications from those with a strong track record of senior leadership experience in the finance or audit function.

Candidates seeking their first non-executive role are welcome to apply for this position, as long as they are committed to the mission and vision of the charity.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, but reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed. The successful candidate will join as a Trustee and attend at least five annual Board meetings, as well as co-chairing the Finance Committee four times per year and reporting on key metrics. The appointed candidate will have the option to work with the other Joint Treasurer and decide how to best liaise with the Audit and Risk Committee, which meets three to four times per year.

Board meetings follow a hybrid approach, with in-person meetings being held in London. Board meetings usually take place in the mornings for around two hours but the Board is flexible around switching those to evening meetings, if the successful candidate serves in a full-time position. The initial length of the appointment is for four years (including an induction year), subject to renewal for another two terms of three years upon mutual agreement.

Location

UK-based candidates are preferred but the Board is open to those who are based internationally as long as they can attend Board meetings in person in London.

Diversity

Nightingale Hammerson strongly welcomes applicants from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, belief or disability. As younger people and those from an ethnic minority background are currently under-represented on the Board, applications from those individuals would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, Nightingale Hammerson may employ positive action where candidates from underrepresented groups can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.

The deadline for consideration is the 29th August 2022.

If you would like to register your interest in this role, please fill in the form below. A member of the Nurole team will be in touch ahead of the deadline to let you know whether it would be worth submitting an application and to discuss the process further.
