About

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is renowned for its research, postgraduate studies and continuing education in public and global health. Founded in 1899 at the London Docks, LSHTM is now based in Bloomsbury, where it has two main sites at Keppel Street and Tavistock Place, and additional sites in The Gambia and Uganda which joined in 2018.

The School's mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide, working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice. Its strategic collaborations in the UK and across high-, middle- and low-income countries deliver health and socioeconomic benefits across the world, especially in the most disadvantaged communities. Research income has grown to more than £180m per year from national and international funding sources including UK government and research councils, the European Union, the Wellcome Trust, Gates Foundation and other philanthropic sources.

LSHTM has an international presence and collaborative ethos, and is uniquely placed to help shape health policy and translate research findings into tangible impact. It has 3,000 staff conducting research in over 100 countries, and more than 4,000 students — all working with a collective purpose to improve health worldwide. The School delivers research-led educational programmes to future health leaders, managers and researchers across the world, with more than 1,200 face-to-face Master's and Doctoral students, 3,800 studying by distance learning, and 500 each year on short courses and continuous professional development. Its free online courses are studied by more than 300,000 participants globally.

The School's outstanding, diverse and committed staff makes an impact where it is most needed - deploying research in real time in response to crises, developing innovative programmes for major health threats, or training the next generations of public and global health leaders and researchers. LSHTM has more than 30,000 alumni in over 180 countries working in government, academia, international agencies and health services.

Role specification

This Committee has been recently formed as the result of a merger between the People Committee and Diversity and Inclusion Committee; the new Committee is assigned responsibility for overseeing the organisational culture of LSHTM.

The Committee’s primary role is to provide strategic oversight of all matters related to people (such as recruitment, retention, well-being, culture, engagement, training and development) as well as equality, diversity and inclusion. The work of the Committee should be informed by sector best practice and LSHTM’s strategic plan.

Reporting to Council, the role of the Committee is to oversee the delivery of an integrated and proactive approach to People and EDI, specifically in meeting the School’s employment related responsibilities, the public sector equality duties and in addressing EDI issues.

Person specification

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is looking for someone with broad HR expertise and an understanding of EDI matters to join its People, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

Applicants will bring in-depth, strategic experience of people issues and how to foster an inclusive organisational culture, particularly around sexuality, gender or disability. Given the higher education environment in which the School operates, those with a background in regulated industries would be particularly welcome but is not essential.

Candidates will be committed to LSHTM's mission to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide, and appreciate how research and education can achieve this.

Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, and reasonable, pre-agreed domestic travel expenses will be reimbursed. The People, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee meets three times per year for two hours, normally between 2pm and 4pm; this is normally face to face but virtual attendance can be accommodated. Any other ad hoc matters arising outside these meetings are conducted via email. The appointment is for an initial three-year term.

Location

This organisation is based in London and meetings will usually take place in person; virtual attendance can be accommodated. Candidates will therefore be UK-based.

Diversity

LSHTM welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, belief or disability. As it looks to ensure a continued gender balance on the Committee, applications from women would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the organisation may employ positive action where candidates from underrepresented groups can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.
