The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is renowned for its research, postgraduate studies and continuing education in public and global health. Founded in 1899 at the London Docks, LSHTM is now based in Bloomsbury, where it has two main sites at Keppel Street and Tavistock Place, and additional sites in The Gambia and Uganda which joined in 2018.

Role specification

The Finance and Development Committee has oversight of the Executive Team’s planning and management of finance, investments and assets of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in their widest sense.

The Committee has a particular remit in relation to providing advice and recommendations to Council, or reviewing / monitoring and approving on behalf of Council, issues such as financial strategy and policy, budget-setting and financial forecasting, financial performance, capital projects and assets, as well as investment and treasury management. It also monitors performance against LSHTM's fundraising strategy.

Person specification

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is looking for two people with either financial acumen or investment expertise to join its Finance and Development Committee.

Finance: Applicants will bring senior, strategic-level experience with oversight of of financial issues; exposure to issues around IT, transformation or research would be useful. They may be financially qualified, but could equally be qualified by experience, for example as the leader of a finance function or as the Partner of an accounting firm. Given the current composition of the Committee, those with experience outside education or the broader non-profit sector would be particularly welcome.

Investment: Applicants will bring senior, strategic-level experience with oversight of investment issues. Some exposure to pensions or real estate will be an advantage.

Candidates will be committed to LSHTM's mission to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide, and appreciate how research and education can achieve this.


Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, and reasonable, pre-agreed domestic travel expenses will be reimbursed. The Finance & Development Committee meets at least four times per year for two hours, normally in the afternoon; this is normally face-to-face but virtual attendance can be accommodated. Any other ad hoc matters arising outside these meetings are conducted via email. The appointment is for an initial three-year term. The upcoming schedule for Committee meetings is as follows:

Location

This organisation is based in London and meetings will usually take place in person; virtual attendance can be accommodated. Candidates will therefore be UK-based.
