About

Together TV is the TV channel which helps viewers channel their inner good to bring about a world where people and their communities thrive together. Through its national TV channel and digital platform, the not-for-profit Community Benefit Society helps people find inspiration to do good in their lives and communities. It programmes entertaining shows that focus on wellbeing, creativity, and the essence of British life, while highlighting the great work of the charitable and voluntary sector. In doing so, it opens its audience’s eyes to the opportunities around them and motivates them to take part in bringing about change in society.

Available 24-hours-a-day and operating since 2000, Together TV is the first supporter-owned national TV channel. Over 30 million people around the world engaged with its content in 2021 and viewers reflect that its programmes inspired them to do more in their local communities, from volunteering for a charity, to getting involved in a creative project, or fundraising for a cause close to their heart.

Together TV is powered by support from over 20 leading media companies, including Arqiva, Sky, BBC, ITV, Facebook, and Salesforce. It also receives support from other public service broadcasters, platform operators, web giants, and newspaper groups, who provide pro bono spectrum, content, and marketing support. It works with leading causes and campaigns, and partners with charities and social enterprises to drive social impact.

Since its rebranding in January 2018, Together TV has seen exciting growth in audience, income, and impact. It now has a sustainable income model and reaches millions each week through its free-to-air TV channel, streaming, digital, and social channels. Over the next five years, Together TV plans to significantly scale its audiences, engagement, and social impact. It will build on its growing TV and social media audiences by expanding its new streaming service and mass-participation engagement campaigns.

Role specification

Together TV seeks a dynamic new Chair to succeed its founder and lead it through its next phase of rapid growth and impact generation. Stepping in at the helm of a well-organised Board, and working closely with the highly experienced Senior Independent Director, this new Chair will support the maturing organisation in the further development and execution of its commercial and social impact strategy. With a highly experienced CEO in place, who has been pivotal in setting the organisation’s strategic agenda and tone, the new Chair will particularly contribute by further establishing the corporate governance structure, as well as by challenging and interrogating the group’s strategic plan.

The Chair will also help guide the management team in professionalising and optimising the existing business model, building brand strength as well as developing new opportunities by helping expand networks and making introductions when necessary. They will act as a critical friend to the management team, coaching and challenging as required and providing leadership and strategic direction to the Board.

Finally, they will hold the organisation to the highest ethical standards, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulation requirements and that Together TV is run in the best interests of its stakeholders.

Together TV is owned and operated by The Community Channel, a charitable Community Benefit Society. The Board of Trustees and Directors is the governing body of the CBS and is collectively responsible for the success of the company. All directors must take decisions objectively in the interests of the company. In addition, Together TV has a trading subsidiary - Community Channel Trading Limited. It is expected that the Chair of the CBS will also be the chair of the trading company.

Person specification

As the Board looks to the next stage of Together TV's journey, it reflects that it is crucial for its new Chair to bring a broad understanding of the wider sector in which it operates. As such, senior experience in an organisation involved in producing or distributing content, for example broadcasting, media, video streaming, or other areas, is essential. Candidates will have held senior general management or operational roles and, as the organisation continues to scale, will offer insights as to navigating the potential challenges and pitfalls of scaling. Applications from candidates who can draw on high level networks in the media, digital content, or broadcast industries would be particularly welcome, though this is not required.

Of equal importance to the Board, alongside experience of the content space, is that the new Chair be able to demonstrate a personal passion for, and commitment to, driving social impact. This may be evidenced, for example, in the form of driving positive change either as an executive within a charitable organisation; as a volunteer; as a Trustee on the board of a non-profit, or driving impact within a business or corporate. Candidates are asked to evidence their commitment to social impact - please see the extra application form section below.

Finally, in order to ensure robust governance and a strong understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Board of Trustees, the Board requires that its new Chair bring prior board experience, potentially gained as an Executive, Non-Executive, Trustee, or Advisory Board Member.

Diversity

Together TV welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. The Board wants to ensure that it is representative of the communities it supports. Applications from under-represented groups would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the organisation may employ positive action where candidates from underrepresented groups can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.

The deadline for consideration is 18th May.

If you would like to register your interest, please fill in the form below. A member of the Nurole team will be in touch ahead of the deadline to let you know whether it would be worth submitting a full application and to discuss the process further.
